THE AGONY
“In this was
manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten
Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we
loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our
sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”
1 John 4: 9 – 11
King James Version
I just watched a family program on television. It was a
story about children who got caught in a snow blizzard on their way home from
school. They were exhausted, freezing, hungry and frightened. Their dad finally
found them and took them home. What a beautiful illustration of the love of God
for us.
We were hungry for love, lost in our sins, exhausted from all the verbal,
physical and emotional abuse in our lives. God looked down with Love and
compassion in His heart and sent His Son into the world knowing that the world
would treat His Son with a cruelty that we will never know or experience.
How can we; how dare we complain to Him about anything after what He has done
for us. The agony in God’s heart was devastating and beyond description. He knew
that He couldn’t go rescue His Son like the dad did in the story. Not only that,
He had to turn His eyes away from His Son as Jesus hung on the cross because
Jesus took on Him our sins. God is holy and He can’t look on sin.
Even today, God’s heart is broken as He sees the way we ignore His Son most of
the day. Many times we get so caught up in our daily schedules that we don’t
even take time for Jesus. What an agony of Love our Heavenly Father and Jesus,
our precious Saviour has given to us! Do you know this beautiful Saviour? Have
you said yes to the Christ of Calvary?
